What’s So Special About 25 October?

International Artists Day

International Artist’s Day on October 25th honours artists and all the contributions they make. The day also celebrates one of the most famous artists, Pablo Picasso. The Spanish artist was born on October 25th, 1881. Artists work hard to create their work. They add beauty to the world around us. Most artists work with many different mediums. Not only that, but the word artist encompasses painters, photographers, sculptors, musicians, dancers, writers, actors, digital artists, and more. When one is born with a creative gift, that creativity flows into many different areas. For example, Picasso was a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, poet, and playwright.

World Pasta Day

October 25th marks World Pasta Day. The day celebrates one of the world’s favourite and most versatile foods. You have probably eaten pasta at one time in your life. Chances are, you eat it several times a week. But what exactly is pasta? This carbohydrate-rich food is made from unleavened dough that comes from durum wheat flour. The flour is mixed with water or eggs and then formed into sheets. Pasta is cooked by either boiling or baking. One of the most amazing things about pasta is that there are over 350 kinds! When eaten alone, pasta is usually topped with different cheeses and sauces. Pasta can be eaten in so many different ways. No wonder it’s one of the most versatile types of food in the world.

International Dwarfism Awareness Day

Every year on October 25, International Dwarfism Awareness Day celebrates little people. The day also spreads awareness for achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that causes dwarfism. Achondroplasia means “without cartilage formation.” It occurs in one in every 15,000 to one in 40,000 live births. Those who have this condition are called dwarfs, which is why this condition is also called dwarfism. Other preferred ways to refer to those with achondroplasia include little people or people of short stature. One word little people do not like to be called is a midget. In 2015, Little People of America (LPA) issued a statement calling for the word to be abolished. They feel it is a derogatory slur to refer to people of short stature.
