A moonquake is the lunar equivalent of an earthquake also called as quake on the moon. They were first discovered by the Apollo astronauts. Though moonquakes may last for an hour, they are much weaker if compared to earthquakes. This happens due to lack of water on moon which doesn’t dampen the ground and make it weak and reduces the vibrations.
There are 4 types of moonquakes, which are as follows :
Deep Moonquakes : Mostly caused around 700 km below the surface.
Shallow Moonquakes : Takes place up to 20 to 30 kilometers from the surface.
Thermal Quakes : Caused when the morning sunlight falls on the frozen crust on the surface after two weeks of deep freeze lunar nights.
Vibration caused due to meteorites.
