50th Anniversary Of Earth Day

Earth Day, is usually celebrated on April 22, and this year is the 50th anniversary. It is usually commemorated with outdoor activities demonstrating support for environmental protection. These include planting trees, collecting roadside or beach trash, and conducting, or participating in, recycling and conservation programs. While the coronavirus lockdowns will restrict some of the usual activities, organizations, educators, and activists worldwide have devised numerous ways to mark the 50th anniversary of this all-important holiday, which is dedicated to climate action this year, without leaving the comfort of your homes. Here are a few of the digital Earth Day celebrations planned for 2020.

BBC America and its new natural history sub-brand, Wonderstruck, are banding together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with four days of programming from April 20-23.

The event includes the debut of documentary She Walks with Apes, narrated by Sandra Oh, as well as the Best of Seven Worlds, One Planet from BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit. The event also will include marathons of Planet Earth, Planet Earth II, Blue Planet II, Dynasties and Seven Worlds, One Planet.

“Now, more than ever, many of us have come to appreciate the extraordinary beauty and deep benefits of the natural world,” said Courtney Thomasma, executive director of BBC America, in a statement. “So at a time when we’re all staying at home, we wanted to give viewers a chance to escape into the wonders of nature as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, with landmark favorites from BBC Studios and brand new documentary specials.”
